Newt cheated, prayed and moved on

The big surprise is not that Newt Gingrich was in the middle of an extramarital affair while spearheading the effort to get Clinton impeached for lying about an extramarital affair with Monica Lewinsky: you've always got to watch out for the moral watchdog types, who seem to have a harder time than most people when it comes to tamping down the sexual hellfire.
It's also no surprise that Newt came clean just the other day to James Dobson, the Colorado Springs fundamentalist maven and would-be Republican kingmaker. Gingrich probably figures that if you're going to admit specific sins, you'd better tell it to a member of the clergy because there's nothing like a patina of grace to cover yourself. But you've got to feel for Dobson. He must have his knickers in a twist. The Republicans who are rising to the top of the GOP milk jug are not what he had in mind.

Mitt Romney's Mormonism has got to be a problem for Dobson, and even if it wasn't, Romney's still got the flip-flop tag dogging him. Rudy Giuliani is pro-abortion and anti-gun, and has been known to commit adultery, wear a dress and live with a gay couple. John McCain has been quoted saying nasty things about conservative evangelicals.

The fact of the matter is that most Americans - heck, most Christians - are just not as conservative as people like Dobson and his Pharisaical followers wish we were.
But I digress: the real surprise in Gingrich's mea culpa is that, apparently, more than one woman wanted to sleep with the guy.

I couldn't agree more. That said, I am sure Dobson and other conservatives are not all that concerned. After the thrashing the GOP took last fall, I think most conservatives have resigned themselves -- privately, at least -- to the realization that 2008 will not be a good year for the GOP. The Democrats will most likely take the White House and retain control of the Congress.

That being the case, evangelicals and conservatives alike can and will take comfort in the fact that the impending losses will happen on the liberals' watch. Ten seconds after we start calling her "President-elect Clinton," you'll see Dobson and other conservatives lining up to say things like, "See what happens when you nominate a pro-abortion, pro-gay, anti-gun Republican like Giuliani?" In short, conservatives are already planning how best to recapture the conservative base of the GOP with an eye towards 2010 and beyond.

I think you need to take a vacation outside of New Jersey, Mr. Riley.

Aside from the fact that most of Reverend Dobson's followers are not at all "pharisaical," most Christians aren't nearly as liberal as you would wish them to be. There is, after all, a reason why Senator Clinton faked that southern accent this week when addressing a group Southern Christians. You may underestimate the conservative leanings of those in the pews, but a political animal like Hillary Clinton sure won't.

I agree with you, anonymous. My problem rests with the fact that all too often people like Dobson and his ilk mistake political conservativism with all types of moral implications. No one is as upright as many from Newt and Dobson's school of conservativism profess the GOP is. They would be much more credible were they to abandon the holier-than-thou pretense.

Like all past elections, final choice will be the "lesser of two evils"...regardless of the candidates..either that, or don't vote at all..

Here's a video clip that I suspect we'll see more than a few times before November of 2008:

Rudy Giuliani on Public Funding of Abortion

Ray, typical liberal democrate if you can't say anything intelligent, you attack a typo.

Yes I will and have said the same thing when it happens to a democrate.

You have proved my point. If you don't have and answer ATTACK.

I suggest you get a new playbook.
