"I was blind, but now I see''
"We're not winning the war in Iraq'' is the equivalent of "Holy Cow! The king's buck naked.''
Everybody knows it, but nobody in power wants to say it.
If we're not winning the war, it's not our soldier's fault. Those men and women are doing their best. A lot of people in Iraq hate each other, and like us less. This whole misadventure has been going bad for some time. And it will be good to have a defense secretary who recognizes that.
In related testimony, Gates also said there is good reason to believe the sky is blue and the grass is green

if he's so independent-minded, why, suddenly after the break did he say ,"we're not losing either"..sounds like his boss gave him some "advice"..he waffled more that an IHOP cook..
We should (a) hang Saddam, (b) declare victory and (c) get out of town quickly. For good measure, maybe we could even throw in a little flag lowering ceremony like the Brits had when they left Hong Kong.
Like much of the Arab world, there is precious little support for democracy in Iraq. The next effective leader of that country will be a dictator that will come to power only after a bloody civil war. Far better for all concerned that we hasten that process by leaving sooner rather than later.
The new plans that call for our arming and training their soldiers to take over have me frightened. Didn't we do that in Afganistan when the Muslims were fighting the Russians only to find that the Taliban became our enemy using what we provided to fight us. Might not these nicely armed and trained troops be sent against Israel because that is what the Iraquis will turn to if they ever stop fighting amonst themselves.
Do you think the U.S. will leave a huge "Mission Accomplished" banner when they retreat? ( In Arabic and all the other sectarian languages, of course)..
I see said the blind man ......
He gave an honest answer. We are winning on the ground in Iraq but the traitors at home in the Fifth Column are attacking our troops from the rear.
The Taliban took over in Afghanistan not because we armed them but because they outfought the others whom we had armed.
why must we waste more taxpayers' money or lives "training and arming" their soldiers?...seems as though that's one thing they are adept at..
