A one-day fling?
There's been testimony in the Melanie McGuire trial that her murdered husband had what has been called "a one-day fling with a co-worker.''
And my question is, "Is such a thing possible?''
I would tend to think not. A "consummation devoutly to be wished'' takes some groundwork, some flirting and some innuendo, not to mention logistics. And once the deed is done, do the parties just stop?
The only "one day'' affair I can think of involves hiring a prostitute and that's not a fling -- that's commerce. Or am I wrong?

Psst! I hate to break the news to you, Riley, but you aren't exactly Brad Pitt. As such, it comes as no surprise that you would have little or no experience with women who, against their better judgment, nonetheless yield, albeit momentarily, to their base feelings of lust and who, as a result, have a one-day (or one hour) fling with a man in whom they are irresistibly attracted.
That said, cheer up! As a former Baptist preacher and now an Asbury Park Press columnist/blogger, surely you've made some serious coin in your day. Oh wait, scratch that.

I agree with you, Mr. Riley. It takes a lot mutual flirting and arrangements to be made to have a one night or one day fling. this wasn't just a "hi, how are you, you're cute, let's go" sort of thing. Only in the movies does that happen.

Women never hook-up with someone they just met. Girls never "go wild" and flash strangers on the street. No married woman in America has ever cheated on her husband with a man she just met. All those people checking into no-tell motels (e.g., The Loop In) for "short-time" stays (4 hours) are just families eager to get back on the road quickly after a short cat nap. God knows we have never seen a daytime talk show where a DNA test was necessary in order to determine who a child's father was. All women are virtuous all the time.
By the way, Margaret, what time does the tooth fairy come to your house?
